Following a night in Nairobi to relax and perhaps enjoy a historic city tour or a delightful restaurant, depart early in the morning on safari to Amboseli. This safari covers the shimmering plains of Amboseli and then continues to Taita Hills and East Tsavo. Here you will certainly see some great herds of elephant and antelope before continuing to Mombasa’s spectacular coast.

A visit to old town reveals the rich culture and architectural heritage of Mombasa.  Fort Jesus built by the Portuguese in the 16th Century: narrow streets, ancient mosques and picturesque residential houses evoke the islands medieval past.  You will see the old dhow harbour, visit the bazaar, and the market. Then drive through the Elephant Tusks on Moi Avenue and call in at the Akamba woodcarvers, where you can see the carvers at work and buy souvenirs.

Lunch at the Tamarind Restaurant or Dhow.  In the afternoon, visit Dr. Rene Haller’s Nature Park (Haller Park), former quarries now reforested and home to many animals.

9. Mt KENYA AND MASAI MARA ADVENTURE :

Travelling north from Nairobi through the lush farming communities from Thika to Nyeri, the landscape drops away to the west into the Great Rift Valley, creating a dramatic back-drop to the journey. The bird-watching and views around Mt Kenya and the lakes are spectacular, while the big-game in Masai Mara is unforgettable.

10. MOUNT KENYA DAY TREK (hike from Park gate) :

For those wishing to sample the adventure of trekking on Mt Kenya but have limited time to scale the high peaks, a day trek is highly recommended. This is a whole day’s trek starting from the Mount Kenya National Park gate. The hike is gradual and the trail passes through dense forest canopies and luxuriant bamboo vegetation before emerging into the sprawling moorlands.

From Naromoru or Nanyuki, we drive across the equator to the Sirimon Park Gate. We hike for 3-4 hours through montane forest, bamboo, rosewood, and heather zones to reach the high altitude moorland at 3,300m above sea level. We trek further to Likii viewpoint for a panoramic view of the majestic high peaks. We then take picnic lunch and descend back to the Sirimon Park gate to board waiting vehicle for transfer back to Nanyuki or Naromoru.

11. NAIROBI LOCAL EXCURSIONS :

DAPHNE SHELDRICK – ELEPHANT ORPHANAGE

Pick up / drop off from your Nairobi hotel or the city centre

Approximate Departure time:                         10:00 – 10:30         

Depart to Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage situated on the outskirts of Nairobi (approximately 45 minutes drive).The Sanctuary is run by Daphne Sheldrick and is set in the grounds of her house. Here, you will see the orphaned animals and meet the people who handle and care for these animals. It’s an interesting excursion and the team who run the orphanage are always willing to spend time answering any questions guests have to ask. Upon completion, return to hotel or city centre by approx 12.45 hrs (lunch is not included). It is suggested that due to demand, visits should be pre-booked and at times there may not be any animals in care. Visiting times are limited to approximately one hour and are between 11:00hrs and 12:00 hrs daily.

It is a compact trip but provides an excellent opportunity to view a diverse variety of wildlife and the overshadowing snow-capped peaks of Mount Kilimanjaro.
