The island was formerly owned by an Arab and used for confinement of refractory slaves. It was bought by General Matthews and the jail (gaol) which still stands was constructed in 1893 and hence the name “Prison Island”. While on the island you will be able to swim, sunbathe and snorkel see giant tortoises.
